Museums were once criticized as old-fashioned institutions, but are today they are at the center of international geopolitical questions. The role of ICOM has also changed. It was founded in 1946 by a small group of professionals, and now  includes some 44,000 members from an array of backgrounds. This video teaser was part of a special exhibition celebrating the 70th anniversary of ICOM at its 24th General Conference in Milan, Italy.

Membership is annual and runs from January 1 to December 31 of every year in which dues are paid. New memberships received after September 30 will become effective as of January 1 of the following year unless otherwise indicated.
