Join us on Thursday, November 5, 2020, at 6:30 PM EST, the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) in Carlisle, Pennsylvania will live-stream a lecture from R.D. Though the fundamental nature of modern warfare has not changed since Carl Von Clausewitz wrote Vom Kreige in the early 19th century, technological advances since then have altered the battlefield significantly.  In his latest book, Beyond Vom Kriege, R.D. Hooker, Jr. examines how war has changed in the modern world and how those changes effect military theory and national security. This lecture will reflect on those lessons learned over the course of six presidential administrations and offer a deep analysis of the conflicts in Grenada, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, among others.

R.D. Hooker, Jr. enlisted in the Army in 1975 as a paratrooper in the 82d Airborne Division.  Later graduating from West Point, he was commissioned in the Infantry and served for 30 years as an Army officer.  During his career he served with five parachute infantry regiments and commanded a paratroop company, battalion, and brigade.  His service included combat tours in Grenada, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, as well as deployments to Rwanda, Bosnia, Kosovo, and the Sinai. A noted author, scholar, and government official, he served in the White House during four presidential administrations, most recently as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Europe and Russia.  A Senior Fellow with the Atlantic Council and a Distinguished Researcher with the University of Oxford's Changing Character of War Program, he holds a doctorate in international relations from the University of Virginia and has taught at West Point, the National War College, and the NATO Defense College.
